How to Check Your Transmission Fluid
While you might leave your car’s regular service routine to the pros at Sunset Chevrolet, it’s good to know how to check fluid levels and other aspects of your engine. You probably know how to check your oil, but you should know how to check your transmission fluid as well. Checking these essential fluids on a regular basis is one of the best ways to stay ahead of any problems that might leave you stranded on the side of the road in Puyallup or Tacoma.
Step-by-Step Guide to Checking Transmission Fluid
Do you drive an older model vehicle? Chances are you have a traditional transmission with a dipstick that can be removed and reinserted. Reference the steps below to quickly and easily check your transmission fluid levels:
- The engine should be warmed up when you check the fluid level, so start by turning your car on. Put it in “Park,” then get out and pop the hood.
- Start by finding the dipstick. On FWD cars, the dipstick is typically found to the right of the oil dipstick. Refer to your owner’s manual for guidance if necessary.
- Take out the dipstick. Touch the fluid and examine it closely. It should have a slightly pink hue. Schedule service immediately if you notice that the fluid has a burnt smell or is discolored.
- Wipe the dipstick off with a rag. Then, reinsert the dipstick. Remove it once again and check the level. You’ll want to add more fluid if the level is under the “Full” marking.
- Add more fluid using a funnel until it reaches the “Full” marking. Do not overfill!
If you can’t find your vehicle’s transmission fluid dipstick, you likely have a sealed transmission.
Transmission Fluid: Inspection & Replacement Frequency
How often do you check your transmission fluid? You’ll want to check your transmission fluid level at least once a month to prevent any issues from developing.
When it comes to replacing (AKA “flushing”) transmission fluid, you’ll want to stick to Chevrolet’s recommended maintenance intervals. For a manual transmission, Chevy generally recommends that you change the fluid every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. If you have an automatic, you’ll want to schedule a transmission flush anywhere from 30,000 to 100,000 miles.
Can You Check the Fluid in a Sealed Transmission?
Not on your own. A “sealed” transmission is one with no removable dipstick, and you shouldn’t attempt to check its transmission fluid on your own. Our certified service technicians have the experience and tools necessary to service sealed transmission appropriately!
If you’re concerned about your sealed transmission’s fluid, let us know when you’re in for your next oil change or other routine maintenance. Remember, if you bought a new vehicle or select used models from Sunset Chevrolet, they’re backed by Oil Changes for Life, because we believe in giving you more for your money.
