What is the Difference Between AWD and 4WD?

When you’re looking for a new Chevrolet SUV or truck, you’re sure to wonder, “Is AWD the same as 4WD?” or “Which is better: AWD or 4WD?” Both provide you with increased capabilities when your Puyallup trips take you off the road, but which is the right fit for your daily drives, AWD or 4WD? We break down the differences for you below.

AWD vs. 4WD: What is All-Wheel Drive?

First, there are two types of all-wheel drive: full-time and part-time. Whichever version you have, AWD usually operates without driver input, and the wheels receive their torque from a series of clutches, viscous couplings, and/or differentials for optimum traction.

Full-Time AWD

Full-time AWD is just what it sounds like: all-wheel drive that’s always on. On dry pavement, it can give you an extra sense of grip and control, while in slippery conditions like rain or mud, you can have more consistent traction for easier handling.

Part-Time AWD

Part-time AWD sends torque to two of the wheels — usually the front, though it can depend on the make/model. Then the system will automatically engage if it senses lost traction, sending torque to the other wheels to help keep you in control.

AWD vs. 4WD: What is Four-Wheel Drive?

Are you wondering, “Is AWD the same as 4WD?” Four-wheel drive is typically meant for heavy-duty hauling or extensive off-roading. If your activities around Auburn call for towing or traversing dirt roads, the 4WD system is further separated into 4WD Low for the tough towing jobs, and 4WD High for the balance of your inside and outside wheels needed to conquer tough terrain.

While full-time 4WD is available, part-time full-wheel drive is more common. These systems trust that the driver knows when they’re going to need to switch to 4WD, and the vehicle is driven by only two wheels (typically the rear) until 4WD is engaged.

Is AWD Better than 4WD?

There’s no better or worse when it comes to AWD vs. 4WD, just better or worse for you. Both AWD and 4WD improve your handling on the road, but to take on uneven roads and nasty weather on daily drives, you’ll probably want AWD. However, for heavy hauls on the Sumner jobsite or excursions far off-road, a 4WD system would be ideal.
