What is a CVT Transmission?

Man using gear shift

If you have been shopping for a new car around Puyallup and Tacoma, you may have come across “CVT” on the specs sheet. So, what is a CVT? The team at Sunset Chevrolet is here to go over the basics of a CVT and how it can be beneficial for many Puyallup drivers.

The Basics

“CVT” stands for continuously variable transmission. You may have also heard this type of transmission referred to as a shiftless transmission, a step-less transmission, or a pulley transmission.

Still not sure what CVT can do for you? Basically, a CVT is a type of automatic transmission that features infinitely variable ratios, two pulleys, and an interceding chain or belt rather than the traditional fixed-gear ratios. Usually, you will find a CVT in compact, fuel-efficient vehicles. They are not common in performance cars. If you value fuel efficiency, a CVT may be your perfect match.

How Does a CVT Work?

In a regular transmission, power is generated with the help of a series of different gears. There are no high and low gears with a continuously variable transmission. This type of transmission uses cone-shaped pulleys that are connected with an intervening belt or chain.

The fixed side remains still. The other side moves by using a hydraulic cylinder depending on your speed. This cylinder adjusts the space between the pulley’s two sides, and when this happens, the belt moves higher or lower. This results in an essentially infinite selection of “gear ratios,” allowing the CVT to offer your engine’s exact needs, no shifting required.

CVT Advantages

  • Fuel Economy: CVTs are typically more efficient than automatic transmissions.
  • Production & Repair Costs: The simplified design of a CVT means they’re often both more affordable to buy and less expensive to repair than many traditional transmissions.
  • Smoother Ride: The transitions of a CVT are barely noticeable while driving. If you’re used to an automatic or manual, those smooth transitions might seem a bit off at first.
